“If ever there were a time when the principles of Scouting were vitally needed—that time is now. If ever there were a generation who would benefit by keeping physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight—that generation is the present generation.” (President Thomas S. Monson, “Called to Serve,” Ensign,Nov. 1991, 47.)
Adding to the testimony of President Monson's, we declare that the scouting program reinforces values which will strengthen boys and prepare them for the work of the Lord. In order to further the work of strengthening boys in Christ, we present the following direction from stake leaders:
Under the direction of the bishop, who "provides general direction for Scouting in the ward and ensures that it is properly organized,"(Scouting Handbook, 4.1) Cub Scout units may "meet in their dens once each week" with a pack meeting "held for all Cub Scouts and their families once a month." (BSA)
A new Cub Scout program will be released by the Boy Scouts of America this summer (beginning June 1, 2015). It is desired that all those participating in Cub Scouts will embrace this new program and do their best to implement this for their scouts. To help leaders properly prepare for these changes, an LDS breakout will be offered at the North Star District Roundtable on Thursday, March 5, 2015. All primary and cub scout leaders in the Platte City Stake are invited to attend this breakout session from 7 to 9 pm at the Kansas City Police Academy 6885 NE Pleasant Valley Road Kansas City, MO 64119.
We caution leaders to be considerate of the demands on families as you plan a successful year of scouting. "Scouting meetings may be held at the meetinghouse, in a home, or in an outdoor setting and should open and close with prayer." (Scouting Handbook, 6.0)
Elder Henry B. Eyring has stated, "Only by the Spirit will you know how to apply what you read in the handbook." (Worldwide Leadership Training, 2011) We encourage all leaders to seek the Spirit in ministering and administering the gospel in your units. We are grateful to those who diligently serve in Primary and in Scouting. May the Lord pour out his blessings upon you and those that you so faithfully serve.
Please feel free to contact a member of the Stake Primary Presidency with any questions.
Most Sincerely,
Emily Burneson, Nancy Shaha, Rebecca Cook, and Tracy Keeney
